What our members say

  • "The course has helped me dissect every piece of content that I write from the paragraph level right down to the word level. I now think in layers, first focusing on ensuring that each paragraph aligns with the core message, then look at individual sentences to identify the different elements in each sentence, and finally, the word choice.”

    – Vinay Sridhar, CMPP, ELS, Freelance Medical Writer

  • “I immediately applied the concepts, especially those for building schemas—strategically placing information in sentences and connecting previous sentence topics to new information—which instantly enhanced my writing flow. . . The community of fellow writers…is a significant benefit, wonderfully supportive and motivating.”

    – Diana Henzel, PharmD, Freelance Medical Writer

  • “The course is practical and informative: I loved the live sessions, interacting and learning with my peers. The checklists and practical examples add a valuable resource. Crystal transformed the writing process from an amorphous entity into an accessible framework – I’m delighted I chose this course!”

    – Rhona Fraser, BVMS, Freelance Medical Writer

  • “Crystal’s step by step, module by module approach is an excellent way to learn about what good science writing looks like and sounds like. The coursework provides a logical, systematic, and straight forward path to writing a better story.”

    – Mary Anne Loafman, MS, BSMT, Freelance Medical Writer

  • “The Scientific Writing Simplified course helped me become more organized in my writing and create systems to make editing smoother. . .Crystal takes you on a logical journey from words to sentences to paragraphs, where ideas are clear, and you don’t leave room for misinterpretations. Now, I feel better equipped to communicate effectively.”

    – Leticia Torres, PhD, Freelance Medical Writer

  • “Crystal’s Scientific Writing Simplified course really does simplify important writing concepts. Rather than cover grammar and punctuation, the course focuses on how to reach your audience and hold their attention until the end. And these concepts are universal: anyone can apply them to any writing. . . Writers at all stages of their career should strongly consider taking this course.”

    – Michele W. Sequeira, MS, MBA, MWC, Senior Public Relations Specialist and Editorial Manager

  • “I have learned insightful and practical ways to write and expand on core ideas. This program paves the way to confidence in writing, not just for those in research but all writers. I now write confidently and use a systematic writing approach to create pieces that impact a reader's informed decision-making.”

    – Lola Ravid, RN, Freelance Medical Writer

The Scientific Writing Masterclass not only taught me how to write better but also how to edit other people's writing. I highly recommend the masterclass to anyone who wants to improve their scientific writing and editing skills.”

    – Lisa Mathiasen, PhD, Scientific Communication Manager

  • “The course helped me to become aware of a number of things that I think I did unconsciously. By making these aspects of writing conscious, I now can be more systematic in addressing them in my writing. . .No matter how well you think you write, you will still learn much that is new..”

SciEdit Pro is different in three key ways:

    • Advanced learning. The curriculum is designed to build on the fundamentals of editing by giving you an editing system and additional trainings on other tasks managed by manuscript editors. You’ll learn strategies and frameworks that you won’t find in any other training program.

    • Supportive mentorship. Many editors are expected to learn on the job, which can be especially difficult for small editorial teams and freelancers. In addition to the curriculum, members get opportunities to apply what they learn, as well as ongoing mentorship from a seasoned editor with both in-house and freelance experience.

    • Ongoing community. Rather than a one-time event, this program includes a supportive community to help you navigate challenges, find solutions, and celebrate milestones as you work toward accomplishing your goals.

If your goal is to learn the fundamentals of editing or get broader editing exposure, other trainings may be best for you. If your goal is to specialize in editing scientific and medical manuscripts, this program provides that dedicated support.

  • SciEdit Pro is an advanced program for editors and writers who already have a solid grasp of English fundamentals. This program will go beyond spelling and grammar to give you strategies and systems to elevate your editing skills.

  • This program is suitable for editors and writers at all stages of their careers.

  • Although SciEdit Pro will primarily focus on manuscripts, the Scientific Writing Simplified course and the Redwood Ink Academy also include trainings on grant proposals and other document types. Also, the skills you learn in the program will apply to anything that you write, down to the emails you send.

Hi, I’m Crystal!

I'm a former biomedical scientist and clinical researcher who — like many of you — did not get adequate writing training in graduate school. That experience shapes everything I do as a scientific editor, educator, and communication strategist.

I've spent more than 15 years editing scientific and medical writing and more than 25 years teaching it. I'm the founder of Redwood Ink and an international speaker, and I've helped thousands of researchers, clinicians, and scientific communicators across the health sciences hone their writing skills.

But here’s what actually matters: I know what it feels like to struggle to put important science into words that resonate with reviewers and readers. And the struggle isn’t a reflection of ability — writing well is a skill, and it can be learned.

I designed SciEdit Pro to give new and early-career editors the training and guidance they need to start and build successful careers as scientific and medical manuscript editors. I want to give you what I wish someone had given me.
